Stage 2 is a practical on-road driving test assessing your competence across 19 categories. It costs €200 per attempt, lasts 1–1.5 hours over a 25–30 km route, and runs at 13 specific test centres. You must record fewer than 3 faults in any category and fewer than 5 in total — any major fault is automatic failure. Reported pass rates average 73–75%.

What Stage 2 is
The second stage of the ADI qualification process.
Stage 2 is a practical on-road driving assessment. It tests whether your driving competence is significantly above that of a normal driver — the examiner assesses you across all 19 categories during a route covering 25–30 km over 1 to 1.5 hours.
Unlike Stage 1 (the theory test), which most candidates prepare for through self-study, Stage 2 is the stage where professional in-car training is widely recommended: an experienced trainer knows what examiners look for and how to bring your driving to the required standard. PassADI is a self-serve theory platform, so we don’t provide in-car training — but the theory you mastered for Stage 1 resurfaces in the technical checks on the day.

The 13 Stage 2 test centres
Unlike Stage 1, Stage 2 is held only at these 13 test centres.
Motorcycle and truck note: category A and CE tests run only at centres with off-road compounds — reported as Sligo, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Finglas and Dundalk, with some sources listing category A at Finglas, Limerick, Sligo and Waterford only. Confirm availability for your category when booking.
The rules that decide it
What the RSA documents about how Stage 2 is run and marked.
Taken in your own car — roadworthy, insured, taxed, with NCT where applicable. The examiner may refuse to proceed if the vehicle is not up to standard.
The route includes motorway or dual-carriageway driving, set manoeuvres and technical checks — 25–30 km over 1 to 1.5 hours.
Cancel with at least 10 working days’ notice or the fee is lost; after two cancellations there is no further free cancellation.
From 9 March 2026, candidates reportedly must provide insurance covering the RSA examiner — confirm when booking.

Test day walkthrough
What to expect on the day of your Stage 2 practical driving test.
Arrive at your chosen test centre with your own vehicle — fully roadworthy, taxed and insured. Bring your full driving licence and ADI eligibility number. You must have passed Stage 1 within the previous 2 years.
Expect a brief Q&A session with the examiner before you start driving. The test then covers 25–30 km over 1 to 1.5 hours, with your driving assessed across all 19 categories. After the test, the examiner provides feedback on your performance, including details of any faults recorded.

Life after your Stage 2 pass
Your options once you have the result.
After passing Stage 2, you can apply for a 6-month trainee instructor licence (€50, once only). This lets you start teaching real learners while preparing for Stage 3 — with at least 20% of your lessons supervised by a sponsoring ADI.

Remember the deadlines: all three stages must be completed within 24 months of your Stage 1 pass, and each subsequent stage within 6 months of the previous one — don’t let a Stage 2 pass expire waiting for Stage 3.

The Stage 2, Answered
€200 per attempt. If you fail, you pay €200 again to rebook — there is no discount for retakes, so it is sensible to budget for at least two attempts when planning your ADI training costs. (RSA.ie)

You can rebook and retake by paying €200 again. Review your examiner’s feedback carefully to focus on weak areas — many candidates book further in-car training targeted at the specific faults recorded before the retake.
